Fine Limit Breakz 9

My last release of 2022 drops today on Fine Limit Breakz 9 alongside choppage heaters from Antares, Krugah, and Opius. Very excited to be included on this one! Cop it over on the Ballpark Recordings Bandcamp.

"Westwood/Eastwood Skank" was a tune that I started back in 2017 when I was working on a forthcoming album (2023?). About 3 weeks ago I was going through the Ableton Projects folder and didn't recognize the title 'Lately'. The jazz sample and drum loop instantly hooked me again and had me skanking around the room for a bit. But the tastes and techniques have changed a lot in 5 years and the tune was gutted and all that remains from the original is the parts between 0:45 - 1:29. The newer patterns slap harder and sequencing flows a lot smoother which make it easier to mix. Opius, bossman of Ballpark Recordings, hit me up a few days later and the tune was finished in a week, which usually takes a month or more for me!

Cover Art Process for Snares N' Roses

My original idea was a snare drum disintegrating or melting upwards like it's in space or some other world with different physics with one small floating rose and 2 drumsticks above it. On a DIY budget, I started messing with the AI sites I had access to. A few of those experiments are above and below.

I wasn't into any of them 100% and tried going another route.

I still wanted a snare as the main shit. So new idea to try was an alien-like snare drum floating in the middle of dense forests on some Twin Peaks shit. I started looking at photos of our hikes here in the Pacific Northwest when I saw the batch of ones Klod took for an Inperspective album but didn't end up using. It had the abandoned pier stilts and it was instantly "yeh that's the one."

breakformation.01

First instalment of a new beat tape series from myself, breakformation.01, is out now. This series, based on flipping video game soundtracks, is something that's been on my 'project ideas list' for years. Theme for this one is Persona 5, an engrossing JRPG series with a soulful and often, melancholy soundtrack.

The game doesn't require as much grinding as some other JRPGs but you may want to do multiple playthroughs of it maxing out different social connections each time. We went through the entire 3 CD soundtrack live on my Twitch channel and flipped some of it for this beat tape. The beats came out so varied, from Hip-Hop with heavy swing, Drumfunk, and there's even a 4/4 House type tune in there titled 'starvick5'! So yeah, most of the tune names are also based on drinks in the game which are a play on real world brands or drinks ha!

Snares N' Roses

Black and white photograph of a giant alien snare drum a top a wooden structure in the middle of a body of water
My newest album, Snares N' Roses, is ready. Very excited with how dope everything turned out from the mastering by Fanu to the laser-etched snare drum with the red tinted cases and my cover design.

I started working on this album right after The Porkchop Tape around late October 2021. It was sent off to manufacturing July 5 and released today, August 15th. The beauty of working with cassette and digital, I can have the music out a lot faster, and move on to the next project. Heavily influenced by instrumental Hip-Hop beat tapes from Knxwledge, Mndsgn, to HxC bands like Jesus Piece, Vein and the breakbeat butchery Equinox plays on his Scientifc Wax show, I wanted to use more breakbeats this time around and further explore this pocket I discovered while working on a forthcoming and completed Inperspective Records album. I don't think I invented it, just discovered that this flow, when I get it right, gives me that studio stank face heavy that no other music I've made has done before!

After talking with Khal about Snares N' Roses, we concluded that it was essentially 'Dilla Time' applied to Drumfunk or Choppage. Dope! He was also very generous with his time to do a write-up about the album which you can read below. Making each track was like healing and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did creating it. Press play and listen in! Out now on a limited edition laser-etched red tinted cassette, digital and streaming on bandcamp.

As disruptive and intriguing as Guns ‘N Roses were on the unsuspecting mainstream during their late ‘80s heyday, Profane’s latest long player Snares N’ Roses could be just as chaos-inducing. With a litany of producers in the drum & bass realm sticking to tight, formulaic four-minute bangers, Profane applies Dilla Time to the entire process, furthering his experiments into the outer reaches of breakbeat science.

Confused? Imagine Paradox and The Alchemist decided to collaborate on a dnb project that sounds like “what if J Dilla made jungle?” One moment, you might get lost in the frantic drumwork on somber numbers like “Drum Slang,” but later an anthemic number like “We Bangin’ That (Jungle Music)” reimagines familiar sounds in ways you never thought possible. “Basill” pairs a hypnotic bassline with hyper drumwork; it’s like someone found archival footage of your favorite jazz bassist and drummer battling during a practice session, ala Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed at the end of Rocky III.

Snares N’ Roses ends with the honey-dripped aggressiveness of “Tearz,” where a lullaby of a loop brightens the day of some of Profane’s toughest drumwork across the project. If this album is a capable drummer trying to understand the junglist framework, “Tearz” is when that broken student becomes the proud master… through the realization that comes with paying attention, especially when the simplistic confines of the modern drum & bass scene are no longer relevant. Whatever you want to call the drum & brilliance emitting from Profane’s studio, we have one piece of advice: Play twice before listening.

Polska's Skeptic Tank Show with Profane

Very grateful Polska asked me to do a mix for his Skeptic Tank Show. It was a great honour to follow past guests like Dodz and Frankie Gunns. I don't have 2 decks at the moment so this is another Ableton Live set with some cheeky surprises! I have been leaning towards sticking with Ableton Live for live sets and programming and looping live remixes of my beats. Idea in progress.

Editing Breakbeats On 'Crazy Space Shit'

Recorded some of my process while making the tune Crazy Space Shit on the Snares N' Roses LP which will be out later this month. I sequenced all the patterns and loops the night before and had to do the morning check if I was still feeling it. There were a few patterns I wasn't 100% with so worked on it a bit more in this video. I'm using Ableton Live and Kontakt 6 sampler to trigger all the samples. Full screen the video to see the drum slices easier.
